Dropping off campers

Each of the campers will need to be dropped off at camp by a parent/guardian/family friend on Sunday, July 28. For those who are driving, please allow for travel time to camp, registration time at camp, and travel time away from camp in your schedule; We would recommend budgeting at least 3 hours.

Camp begins with registration on a staggered timeslot process. If there is a situation in which carpooling is necessary or siblings have different times, choose the timeslot of the earliest arriving camper as your registration time. Allow about an hour to complete the registration process; students with medications will need additional time to speak to the Nurse. Please do not arrive early and please come with your parent/guardian who will stay with you through the registration process.

Please arrive for registration at the following times:

3:00 p.m. – Counselors, Junior Counselors, and Staff (no Campers at this time)

4:00 p.m. Campers who play a String Instrument

4:30 p.m. – Campers who play a Wind or Percussion Instrument

Picking up campers

Each of the campers will need to be picked up at camp on Saturday, August 3. For those who are driving, please allow for travel time to camp, the camp concert, and travel time away from camp in your schedule; We would recommend budgeting at least 5 hours.

Mailing to camp

Each of the campers love to receive mail and we strongly encourage everyone to send lots of it. They certainly enjoy hearing from you. Mail LETTERS ONLY (NO PACKAGES), early in the week. We recommend sending your letters by Wednesday to make sure they get delivered as it can take several days to make it to camp. You can send letters to the follow address:

BELLIS MUSIC CAMP

PO Box 1194

Sierra Madre, CA 91025

Contact during camp

There is no cellphone service at camp, so if your camper needs to contact you, they can call you from the camp payphone. We also make daily trips to camp, in case there are urgent situations for communication (email us directly at bellismc@gmail.com)

Camper medication and health assistance

We have our own Bellis Music Camp R.N., Delanie McKendrick, who will take care of any campers needing medication (please complete the attached Daily Medication Record, if your camper will be taking any meds while at camp, and bring this with you to registration) or require any health assistance. She will talk with each of you at registration to get any last minute updates in your child's health situation. Being at a higher altitude, drinking lots of water is ALWAYS emphasized.

Auditions

Upon arrival to camp, all campers will participate in a short, private audition. The purpose of this audition is to properly place students within their performing group (band or orchestra) and ensemble group.

During auditions, campers will be expected to play 1 or 2 scales (staff's choice), a short prepared piece (camper's choice), and sight-read an excerpt of music provided by the staff.

An appropriate prepared piece may include:

Camp Concert

Concert Time: 2:00 p.m.

Facebook Event Link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1014392650283388/

Please plan on attending an outdoor concert held at the ACCC Amphitheater; you’ll hear students perform in the Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra, and Symphony Orchestra. Please bring a folding chair/blanket/iced cold drinks and sit under the trees. There is limited shade, so please be prepared for a sunny concert experience. There will be ACCC staff to help direct traffic and coordinate parking and since we expect a large audience on Saturday, please allow plenty of time to get up the mountain and park. We thank you for your patience on concert day!

All performers are expected to remain at camp until the end of the concert, and then you can take your camper home. The concert will be over at approximately 3:30 p.m.

History

Bellis Music Camp was founded in 1957 by music educator, Lawrence Bellis. Its purpose is to serve young musicians by creating an atmosphere where musical and social skills can be combined to bring out the best in each young person. This week-long, sleep-away summer camp is located in the San Gabriel Mountains, serving middle school aged music students throughout Southern California. Campers participate in a variety of ensembles, theory classes, and recreational activities. The week culminates in a concert for our campers' friends and family.
